Foreign books and magazines will be 20% off on rainy days during 1 - 31 March, 2007 at all branches of Aoyama Book Center. What a cute promotion!
Aoyama Book Center or ABC is my all time favorite book store. Very glad to see them back and be so lively again after all branches were disappeared regarding the big storm of their business in 2004. Though the main store at Aoyama was back shortly after their crisis, it took a while to open new branches. Since last year, ABC seemed to strong enough again to reopen and open new store from Roppongi, Roppongi Hills, HMV Shibuya following the newest branch at Maru Building last January. Also, they always hold event, fair and interesting exhibitions at each branches.
*This rainy days promotion will be held 3 times a year in Spring, Early Summer and Fall.

Sweet talk, my newest book (in Thai) about sweet in Japan — some are my favorites while some are my brother&sister’s or friends’ favorites. It begins from delicious taste leading to be fun in digging information behind — finding interesting legend, overwhelming with hardworking for perfect flavor, smiling with funny marketing strategy or learning valuable philosophy.
At the same time I had to be patient for beautiful natural light in photo shooting — someday it was so windy blowing away my sweet, someday was full of rain making my outdoor studio closed but mostly it was so hot and hot. Some photos I shot in Tokyo and lost many shots as we ate them all before shooting. (Well, they were so tempting…) However, I got hundreds of photos!
After that I left all to my sister took over to make dream come true.
Finally, sweet talk is published. Yeah!

Kewpie the famous brand of Japanese mayonnaise established in 1919. Nakashimato Ichiro, the founder tasted mayonnaise when he studied in US bringing to the first production of kewpie mayonnaise in 1925 and certainly with Kewpie doll logo. The production in glass jars was changed to be in the soft squeeze bottles in 1958
However the one who really gave birth to kewpie is Rose O’Neill, the American artist. Her Kewpie illustration was first featured in Ladies’ home journal in 1909. The name, Kewpie comes from Cupid the Roman god of love. The popular of kewpie made Rose O’Neill got mountains of letter from children requesting kewpie doll. Kewpie dolls were made in 1913 by German manufacturer. However, the first prototype did not come out as Rose O’Neill imagined so she went to German herself to advise the doll makers for the perfect kewpie. It was produced in 9 different sizes. It is estimated that Rose earned $1.4 million from the kewpies. There was an episode when Rose O’Neill saw the tiniest size of kewpie, she told the doll makers that please do your best, make it as beautiful as the big ones since it will be the poor children who afford this tiny size. The first kewpie dolls manufactured by J.D.Kestner in standing post, its arms can move up and down, made of bisque with 12cm tall. The label in front of the box was illustrated by Rose O’Neill too.
In fact, Kewpie in the first year was quite slim then 2-3 years later the belly became round and bigger as cute as we are familiar today.

Audrey Hepburn and camera seem to be the perfect match.
Her pictures are always full of feel&touch of that moment.
When I saw this new biography, The Audrey Hepburn Treasure, I can’t help but smiling with her and even had a bigger smile on the inside. So lovely! The mementos were shared by the reproductions of letters, call sheet, preview screening tickets, etc. tucked into glassine envelops at each memory of her life.
Her drawings astonished me most as I did not realize her drawing skill before. From her childhood artwork to mother and child, Audrey’s drawing of Ethiopian mother and child used as unicef greeting card and the original artwork was auctioned. It raised a fund for 4 camels used to help transport vaccination to children in the most remote and inaccessible regions.
This book filled of beautiful photos and love, also a portions of the proceeds will go to the Audrey Hepburn children’s fund.
