Hot weather makes me thinking of something cool and refreshing.
When I was young, our refrigerator will full of fruit jellies in summer. But they would not be long displayed as they usually disappeared immediately — my brother, sister and cousins knew well when they would be ready!
Above are jellies from Zerry House, a jelly shop in Fukushima, Japan. Their colorful jellies made of 100% gelatin and there are mousse hiding inside. They look so delicious and refreshing from the heat in Bangkok right now.
Mottainai Grandma by Mariko Shinju is the picture book which was published in Japan 2004. ( Mottainai Baasan / Japanese title) Mottainai is the thoughtful Japanese word with love and compassion to think of the gift from the nature or someone who made the product. The word closest to Mottainai in English is “What a waste!”, “Do not waste!” or the situation a thing is being wasted or being used without good care and consideration.
Mottainai Grandma is coming!
Leftover food on the plate.
Last grains of rice stuck to the bowl.
She will come and say, “Mottainai!”
“So much food left - mottainai! May I eat?”
Munch munch gulp gulp llick lick
“Oh, you have more rice grains sticking to your face.Mottainai!”
And she licked my face all over……
“Let me lick more!” lick lick lick
Splash splash
Leaving the water running.
She will come and say, “Mottainai!”
“One cup of water is enough! Don’t Waste it - mottainai !”
When I throw away mandarin peels,
she will come and say “Mottainai!”
“Dry them in the sunshine. Put them in the bathtub.
Mandarin peels will make you feel so good!”
“A warm and sunny mandarin bath!”
…

Are you sure you are not doing anything mottainai?

Tadahiro Uesugi is my favorite illustrator since I knew his works almost 10 years ago. Sophisticated and stylish!
and “light”.

His works are so warm-hearted, amazingly giving the feeling of the moment — warmth from the sunshine, wind blowing in the picture.
As pilarcat’s asked me to talk about his solo exhibition I had a chance to visit in March 2005. It was exhibition on his 10th anniversary. I remembered how glad I was when I knew his solo exhibition would be held in Tokyo during the time I would go to Tokyo. Fortunately I met him at the gallery, he was humble and so kind, also explained his works to me. How lucky I was!
He had comment on his past 10 years works that he came across that his work are often recollection or patchwork of previous motifs which made that exhibition more interesting to find out what he said.
To me, after that exhibition Uesugi san seems to enjoy with lighting and angles more and more especially lighting is so prominent.
His works always bring me joy!
Caperino & Peperone celebrate Colette’s 10 year anniversary.
I can’t help but smiling at the collaboration with Lacoste. It is such a cute polo!
Look when Caperino & Peperone face Lacoste.
There are more cool collaboration such as Repetto ballet shoes, Cartier bag, Goyard Portfolio, Charles&Ray Eames for Vitra chairs, Be@rbrick at 1000% (wow!) or even Pierre Herme’s Macaroons.

- My own illustration by adobe illustrator around March-April last year, it is one of the series I named spinach lover. Except this spinach drink, there are wanted spinach lover, spinach lover news, spinach cracker and spinach soap. She is spinach lover so her eyes are green as spinach. Her polo was inspired by Gucci s/s 2006 but adding funny skull, accessorized with pearl chains on the waist and favorite vintage nike.
